Georgia Homestead Tax Exemption for Disabled Veteran, Surviving Spouse or Minor Children
For tax year 2026, qualifying honorably discharged Georgia Veterans may receive a homestead property-tax exemption of up to $126,526 in assessed value. Eligibility includes a VA 100% rating, payment at the 100% rate because of individual unemployability, or specified VA statutory awards for loss or loss of use of hands or feet or qualifying vision impairment. The Veteran must own and occupy the home; qualifying unremarried surviving spouses or minor children can continue the exemption while occupying it. Value above the exemption remains taxable; apply through county tax officials.
An agency must make the actual eligibility decision.
The program is source-verified, but its eligibility rules are not automated in this record.
How to read this record
The tax-year exemption ceiling applies to assessed value; it is not a cash payment or the amount of tax saved. Georgia’s general agency page still quotes a 2025 ceiling. The linked Department of Revenue memo, reproduced on page 37 of Chatham County’s May 2026 agenda, confirms the stored 2026 ceiling of $126,526. Ask the county about filing, qualifying ownership and occupancy, and survivor provisions.
