Combat Zones Exclusion and Filing Extensions for Nebraska Income Taxes for Deployed Service Members

Nebraska follows federal combat-zone rules for excluding qualifying military compensation and extending income-tax filing and payment deadlines. Relief applies only when the federal combat-zone, contingency-operation or hazardous-duty-area requirements are met; penalties and interest do not accrue during the qualifying extension. Follow Nebraska return instructions to identify the service location and dates.

Insurance

National Guard Association of Nebraska State Sponsored Life Insurance (SSLI)

The National Guard Association of Nebraska offers group life-insurance options through the Militia Insurance Trust for eligible Guard members and families. The provider lists $1,000 of basic coverage at no cost to eligible members, with optional paid member, spouse and child coverage. Enrollment and policy terms apply. This is association-administered insurance, not a VA entitlement.

Education

Nebraska “Operation Recognition” High School Diplomas for Wartime Veterans

Nebraska Operation Recognition awards honorary high-school diplomas to qualifying Veterans who left school before graduating to serve during World War II, Korea or Vietnam, were honorably discharged, and did not earn a diploma after service. Current or former Nebraska residence is required. Apply through NDVA with military-service information; this is the Veteran’s recognition award, not a dependent scholarship.

Employment

Nebraska Commercial Driver License (CDL) Skills Test Waiver

Qualified military drivers may request a Nebraska CDL skills-test waiver; designated military occupations can also qualify for Even Exchange knowledge-test relief. The current DMV instructions describe a temporary 24-month recent-service window. Commander certification, driving-record and applicable medical requirements remain. School-bus and hazardous-material endorsement tests are not waived. Confirm the current window with DMV before applying.

Other resources and recognition

Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) State Veterans Service Offices and County Veterans Service Offices

NDVA accredited service officers provide free help to Veterans and family members with benefit eligibility, application forms, disability claims and appeals. The State Service Office can be reached at 402-420-4021; NDVA also publishes a county and tribal service-officer directory. Underlying benefit eligibility is decided separately from receiving this assistance.

Other resources and recognition

Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) World War II Veteran Recognition Program

NDVA awards a free commemorative medal to living World War II Veterans who served between December 1, 1941 and December 31, 1946, were discharged other than dishonorably, and either currently reside in Nebraska or resided there when entering service. The recognition program has no application deadline and continues beyond its 2025 anniversary events.

Vehicle, license, and plate

Nebraska Disabled American (DAV) Veteran License Plate

Nebraska DAV plates are available to qualifying Veterans with at least a 10% service-connected disability, honorable or general discharge, and approved Nebraska Veterans Registry status. Standard alphanumeric DAV plates have no specialty fee; personalized plates cost $40 annually. Normal vehicle taxes and registration charges still apply unless a separate exemption is approved. DAV plates alone do not authorize accessible parking.

Property and state tax

Nebraska Disabled Veteran Motor Vehicle Tax Exemption

Nebraska offers a motor-vehicle tax exemption for one vehicle owned and used for personal transportation by a qualifying honorably discharged Veteran with an established service-connected disability or qualifying VA compensation, disability retirement or pension. Veterans Registry verification and benefit documentation are required. Apply within 30 days of purchase or before renewal expires, as applicable. This separate tax exemption is not automatic merely because DAV plates were issued.

Nebraska Driver's License Expiration Extension for Active Duty Service Members and their Families

An active-duty service member stationed outside Nebraska, and eligible family members living with them, may request a Form 07-08 military extension attached to a Nebraska driver license. DMV describes validity for 60 days following discharge or return to Nebraska. Submit the signed request, license copy and current orders. Limited-term licenses are excluded; do not assume the extension is automatic.

Vehicle, license, and plate

Nebraska Gold Star Family License Plate

Qualifying relatives of a service member who died while on active duty in good standing may apply for Nebraska Gold Star Family plates. Eligible relationships include a surviving spouse whether remarried or not, specified ancestors and descendants including step-relations, foster or in-loco-parentis parents, and siblings. Veterans Registry verification is required. Standard plates have no specialty fee; personalized plates cost $40 annually, with ordinary vehicle charges still applicable.

Property and state tax

Nebraska Income Tax Exemption for Nonresident Military Spouses

Qualifying nonresident military spouses may exclude Nebraska earnings for services when present solely to accompany a service member under military orders. Federal law permits a married service member and spouse to elect the tax residence of either spouse or the service member’s permanent duty station; a shared preexisting domicile is not the only route. Follow Nebraska withholding and nonresident-return instructions and obtain tax advice for other income or property.

Vehicle, license, and plate

Nebraska Military Honor License Plates

Nebraska Military Honor and Reserve plates offer branch, component, Veteran and campaign designs for eligible applicants verified through the Veterans Registry. The January 2026 application includes Space Force and Inherent Resolve designs. Numeric plates have a $5 annual specialty fee and personalized plates $40; normal production and registration charges remain. Vehicle ownership/title rules include specified leased-vehicle and nonresident-military exceptions.

Vehicle, license, and plate

Nebraska Military License Plates

Nebraska DMV offers Military Honor, Disabled American Veteran, Purple Heart, Gold Star and other military plate options. Each program has its own service or family proof, Veterans Registry requirements, vehicle rules and fees. A military design does not by itself waive all registration charges or provide accessible parking.

Health care

Nebraska National Guard Workers’ Compensation Coverage and Benefits for Injury, Illness, Disability and Death Incurred while on State Active Duty

Nebraska National Guard members ordered to state duty by competent authority may receive Workers’ Compensation Act coverage for an accident or occupational disease arising out of and in the course of that duty. Qualifying dependents may receive death benefits. Payments due under 32 U.S.C. §318 reduce the state amount as the statute provides; unrelated illness or all military service is not automatically covered.

Employment

Nebraska Private Sector Voluntary Veterans Hiring Preference

Nebraska private employers may adopt a written, uniformly applied policy favoring qualified Veterans and specified military spouses over equally qualified applicants in hiring or promotion. Covered spouse routes include an active-duty member’s spouse and a limited post-separation period, a spouse of a 100% permanently disabled Veteran, and specified service-related survivors. This optional employer policy is not a guaranteed job.

Vehicle, license, and plate

Nebraska Purple Heart License Plate

Eligible Purple Heart recipients verified through the Nebraska Veterans Registry may obtain Purple Heart plates. The January 2026 DMV form requires vehicle ownership or a permitted leased/nonresident-military registration arrangement. Personalized plates have a $40 specialty charge; ordinary production and registration charges may apply. The plate alone does not grant accessible-parking privileges.

Education

Nebraska Reservist Tuition Credit Program

Nebraska residents serving satisfactorily in a Nebraska-based Active Selected Reserve unit with at least a three-year service agreement may qualify for 75% tuition credit, or 50% for graduate and professional study, at participating Nebraska public institutions. The program accepts up to 200 new applicants each calendar year, has no qualifying member lifetime limit, and requires commander certification and term-by-term recertification.

Travel and recreation

Nebraska Special Annual Hunt Dates for Veterans

Honorably discharged Nebraska resident Veterans can obtain a free one-day hunting permit and specified state stamps for Veterans Day, November 11. Federal duck-stamp and HIP requirements still apply when applicable. Nebraska also offers two special youth/Veteran/active-military waterfowl days with separate dates and ordinary permit requirements; consult the current season schedule.

Employment

Nebraska State Employment Veterans Hiring Preference

Qualified Veterans receive preference in covered Nebraska state and local public hiring and specified return employment. Five percent is added to a passing examination score, with another five percent for qualifying disabled Veterans. Certain active-duty spouses, spouses of permanently totally disabled Veterans and qualifying survivors have separate eligibility routes. Required proof, job qualifications and notice rules apply; preference is not a guaranteed appointment.

Property and state tax

Nebraska State Income Taxes on Military Retired Pay

For Nebraska tax years beginning January 1, 2022 or later, military retirees may exclude qualifying military retirement benefits from Nebraska taxable income to the extent those benefits are included in federal adjusted gross income. No prior election form is required. This military-pension rule does not establish a blanket exemption for all Thrift Savings Plan withdrawals; other retirement distributions require separate tax review.

Property and state tax

Nebraska State Taxes on Military Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan (RCSBP) and Retired Serviceman’s Family Protection Plan (RSFPP) Annuities

Qualifying military retirement annuities paid to a spouse, former spouse or child under programs such as SBP, RCSBP or RSFPP can be excluded from Nebraska taxable income to the extent included in federal adjusted gross income. Nebraska’s military tax guide explains the qualifying payer and retirement-benefit rules; federal taxation is a separate question.

Property and state tax

Nebraska State Taxes on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation is a tax-free federal benefit for eligible surviving spouses, children or parents. Federal law protects qualifying VA benefit payments from state taxation as well; property purchased with those payments is not itself made exempt. DIC eligibility and military Survivor Benefit Plan annuities are separate matters.

Property and state tax

Nebraska Veteran and Surviving-Spouse Homestead Exemptions

Nebraska’s homestead exemption provides full or partial property-tax relief to qualifying Veterans and surviving spouses under specific eligibility categories. Homeownership and occupancy generally must run January 1 through August 15 of the application year, with statutory exceptions. Apply to the county assessor after February 1 and by June 30; income and property-value limits depend on the category and tax year. Use the current-year forms and tables.

Other resources and recognition

Nebraska Veteran Discharge Documents

NDVA maintains military discharge records and can provide a copy when a qualifying record is on file. A Nebraska entry or return connection may help locate it but does not guarantee availability. Use the official DD-214 request process and required identity or representative documentation; NDVA identifies county and National Personnel Records Center alternatives.

Employment

Nebraska Veteran Employment Services

Nebraska Department of Labor job centers offer employment and training assistance to Veterans and eligible spouses, including job-search planning, résumés, skills assessment and employer connections. Eligible participants receive priority of service in covered programs. Specialized services have additional eligibility conditions; specified family caregivers of wounded service members may qualify. This is job assistance, not a dependent tuition award.

Financial

Nebraska Veterans Aid (NVA) Fund

Nebraska Veterans Aid is temporary emergency assistance for qualifying Veterans and eligible spouses or dependents when an unforeseen emergency occurs and other resources are not immediately available. Covered needs include food, fuel, shelter, transportation, daycare, clothing, funeral and medical expenses. Qualifying active service and discharge or service-related death conditions apply. Apply through an authorized state, county or post service officer; assistance is not automatic.

Family

Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance (NVCA)

The Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance offers burial and memorial options for eligible Veterans and dependents, including a committal shelter and a memorial garden for scattering cremated remains. Apply for eligibility determination with military and, where applicable, relationship documents; contact cemetery staff for arrangements.

Other resources and recognition

Nebraska Veterans’ Death and Burial Registry

Since July 19, 2024, NDVA’s Veterans Registry is the state repository for Veteran death and burial information. Authorized service offices enter and update the records using death certificates, cemetery or funeral-home information and supporting documents. Contact NDVA or a county service officer about records assistance; this administrative registry is not a cash or burial-cost benefit.

Health care

Nebraska Veterans’ Home Spouse and Survivor Admission

A spouse may qualify for a Nebraska Veterans’ Home when married for at least two years before the eligible Veteran’s entrance into the home. Specified surviving spouses and parents have separate admission routes requiring at least two years of Nebraska residence and inability to earn a livelihood. The current statute no longer contains the old minimum age 50 or public-charity dependency conditions. Care needs and remaining admission requirements still apply.

Health care

Nebraska Veterans’ Homes

Nebraska operates four Veterans’ Homes in Kearney, Norfolk, Bellevue and Scottsbluff, offering assisted-living, skilled-nursing and memory-care services according to facility capability. Eligible Veterans and specified spouses or survivors must meet admission, care-need and residency rules; charges and availability require individual assessment.

Health care

Nebraska Veterans’ Homes Locations

Nebraska’s four Veterans’ Homes are Central Nebraska in Kearney (225 beds), Norfolk (159 beds), Eastern Nebraska in Bellevue (144 beds), and Western Nebraska in Scottsbluff (up to 109 members). Contact the individual home for care options, admission requirements and current availability; licensed capacity does not mean an open bed.

Financial

Nebraska Vets Get Pets Program

Nebraska Vets Get Pets can pay up to $350 in adoption fees directly to a Nebraska-licensed shelter or rescue for an eligible Veteran approved through the Veterans Registry. Approval must be obtained before adoption, and the benefit can be used once. Qualifying service, discharge, documentation and available funding rules apply; it is not a general cash grant or automatic reimbursement.

Education

Nebraska Waiver of Tuition Program

Eligible Nebraska-resident spouses and children of qualifying Veterans may receive tuition and fee relief at Nebraska public colleges. Statutory routes include service-related death, permanent total disability (including permanent IU), and POW/MIA status. Children generally must be under 26, with a limited military-service extension no later than age 31. The statute waives tuition and fees remaining after specified grants; ask the school which charges qualify. One community-college credential must precede the one permitted bachelor’s degree.

Travel and recreation

Nonresident Active Duty Service Members Stationed in Nebraska May Purchase Nebraska Hunting, Fishing and Fur Harvest Permits for Resident Prices

Active-duty military personnel stationed in Nebraska for at least 30 days meet Nebraska hunting-permit residency requirements. The 2026 fishing guide also recognizes that route for resident fishing permits. Present required service or residency documentation and comply with the permit, stamp and species rules; no VA disability rating is required.

Property and state tax

Service-Connected Totally Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses – 100% exempt

Qualifying Nebraska Veteran homeowners with a 100% permanent service-connected disability or a 100% individual-unemployability rating can receive full homestead relief without an income or home-value limit under category 4V. VA certification, qualifying service, ownership, occupancy and filing rules apply. Specified surviving spouses have separate category 4S conditions, including certain remarriages after age 57; survivor relief is not automatic for every spouse.

Vehicle, license, and plate

Veterans’ Designation on Nebraska Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards

Qualifying Veterans can add a Veteran designation to a Nebraska driver license or ID after approval in the Nebraska Veterans Registry. DMV advises allowing at least one business day after registry approval. Adding it at normal renewal has no extra designation charge; an early replacement has ordinary replacement fees. Registry and underlying license requirements still apply.
