DC Tax Treatment of Military Disability Retirement Pay

Military disability retirement pay is not automatically tax-free and is not the same as VA disability compensation. Federal exclusions depend on qualifying pre-September-1975 status, combat-related injury, or the amount of VA disability compensation the retiree would qualify for. Service-length pensions may remain partly taxable. DC starts with federal gross-income rules and applies its adjustments. Check IRS Publication 525 and current DC instructions for the particular payment.
